Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
Lion's rock, expensive ticket, can view the rock from other rocks but still worth visiting. Expect a visit to last half a day.
➡ Sigiriya is an archaeological site, not a sacred one, so shorts are fine and a sarong is not necessary.
➡To avoid the fiercest heat and the thickest crowds. get as early a start as possible; the ticket office inside the museum opens at 6.30am.
➡ Most people enter the site from the west and exit to the south.
➡ A good strategy is to head straight for the rock itself so that you're climbing Sigiriya in the relative cool of the early morning. Then later in the morning you can amble around the gardens and tour the museum.

Bahirawakanda temple
The Three Temples Loop (including the Lankatilake, Gadaladeniya and Embekka Devale temples) is a worthwhile excursion. You might then choose to hit the botanic gardens for the afternoon to make it a full day out.

Knuckles Mountain range? Not alot to see in Kandy, quick stop. Kandy to Ella train, must do. Book in advance or turn up and book at station. Emily Thomsen ticket is 200% sure that you can buy from the station. It's the seats that you need to think of. One tip. You can buy 2nd class tickets and try your luck in 2nd class compartment. If not 3rd class is always available for the 2nd class tickets. So you can try it also with the 2nd class ticket that you buy on the day.

Ella from Nuwara Eliya through the mountains and the tea plantations. We loved our time in Ella: it's full of tourists for a good reason with the (walk along track to) Nine Arch Bridge, the Amba Tea Plantation, Secret Waterfall, Ravanna Falls, Little Adams Peak, train track walk to Ella Rock tricky to find, turn of train track towards little bridge and waterfall from 15.40 Rosie Roaming, don't listen to the ladies at the bridge who will
try and tell you to turn left. Turn right then left
across the field- not to mention the cute (if hectic) town itself.

Roaming Rossies. We decided we hadn't had enough of elephants - and so we backtracked a bit to head to Big Game Safari at Udawalawe. And wow was it worth it - a great camp site and a brilliant safari made for another memorable day in Sri Lanka.
