Recommended Tunisian ATMs

BTL (Banque de Tunisie et des Emirats): Has been reported to allow users to select "other amount" and withdraw higher amounts (around 800 TND or more, depending on the ATM's cash and your bank's limits), and sometimes did not end up charging the stated 10 TND fee upon final statement review.
TSB (Tunisie-Saudi Bank): Has been noted for having no fees in the past, though withdrawal limits are lower (around 300 TND per transaction). You can perform multiple withdrawals.
QNB (Qatar National Bank): Previously had no fees, but recent reports indicate they may now charge around 10 TND.
Key Considerations:
Fixed Fees: Most Tunisian ATMs charge a fixed fee (typically 10-15 TND) per withdrawal for foreign cards. The actual fee should be displayed on screen before you confirm the transaction.
Withdrawal Limits: Many ATMs have low transaction limits (e.g., 300-400 TND). To minimize the impact of the fixed fee, use ATMs that allow higher withdrawals per transaction, such as BTL or some branches of BIAT (up to 800 TND).
Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC): If the ATM asks if you want to be charged in South African Rand (ZAR) or Tunisian Dinar (TND), always choose TND. This ensures you get your South African bank's exchange rate, which is usually better than the ATM operator's rate.

Hi all,
I've just spent 10 days in Tunis and I want to post an update here about the TGM train, which runs from Tunis, via La Goulette and Sidi Bou Said to La Marsa, because before my trip I've seen a lot of confusion and conflicting information here on the forum and also on other pages. I've travelled the route several times during the trip and this is what I've found out:
- The train is running. Only a very short section (roughly 500 meters) is under long-term construction.
- If you want to travel between Tunis and Carthage, Sidi Bou Said or La Marsa, the staff at the ticket counters will want to put you on a bus. The buses are extremely crowded and stuck in traffic, so it's an absolutely horrible way to travel.
- You can still take the train. But you have to tell the staff that you want to change in the middle. They will then sell you the ticket, which costs 0.800 TND.
- When you do this, then in the direction of La Marsa you will be dropped of at La Goulette Casino station. You will then walk roughly 500 meters to the station Kheireddine, where you'll board the train to La Marsa (and vice versa).
- The train runs once an hour throughout the day (hh:15 from Tunis, hh:00 from La Marsa). When travelling from La Marsa
to Tunis, the connection is perfect - the train leaves from Casino roughly 10 minutes after the train from La Marsa arrives to Kheireddine. It's not so good the other way - the gap is then about 45 minutes. There are many cafés and fast foods between the two stations, so you can take it as an opportunity to grab lunch or coffee

2.1 Short Circle Bosphorus Cruise (Kısa Boğaz Turu)
First up is the non-stop Short Circle Bosphorus tour. This one is great for people who are pressed for time but don’t want to miss a genuine Bosphorus experience. This tour is available twice a day in summer (June 16th until September 18th), and once a day during the low season. The cruise takes you from Eminönü to Istinye (well past the second bridge that is), and back.
cross over to the Asian side, I would recommend a ferry that goes to Kadıköy. You can leave from and return to either end of the Galata bridge (Karaköy, which is the end near the ship, or Eminönü, which is the end near the Old Towb). This is a nice ride to take in the evening, too, so I wouldn't necessarily worry about rushing to do it in the daylight. You could take the tram after your ship docks to the Spice Market, walk around that area for a while, and then take the ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy (there is a whole row of ferry terminals at Eminönü, be sure to find the one that says "Kadıköy"). Visit Kadıköy, then take the ferry back to Karaköy, and walk back to the ship.
You will be crossing the Bosphorus, but you will only be seeing the Istanbul end of the Bosphorus. When people talk about doing a Bosphorus cruise, they usually mean going up towards the Black Sea. This is a lovely excursion, with lots of interesting things to see and stops to make along the way, but it takes several hours, so you will have to wait until your next trip to do that!
The ferry leaves the Eminönü docks at 14:40 ( and at 16:45 on holidays in summer) , arrives at Ortaköy around 15:10 ( and 17:15 respectively) to pick up more people, and then continues its two-hour non-stop tour. Our guided tour takes in sights including ANZAC Cove, Lone Pine Memorial and cemetery, Chunuk Bair Memorial and cemetery, the Nek, Johnston’s Jolly and the many fortified trenches still clearly visible amongst the scrub after all these years.

Ephesus, Turkey
Today, we explore legendary Ephesus - perhaps the best-preserved classical city in the eastern Mediterranean. Under Roman rule, Ephesus was a vast and prosperous city with a population nearing 250,000. It was an important centre of commerce and a popular destination for pilgrims who came to see the great Temple of Artemis - one of the Seven Ancient Wonders.
We have plenty of time to tour the marble ruins of Ephesus. Discover the famous Library of Celsus, the Stadium, the gymnasium of Vedius and the Great Theatre. We’ll see ancient public toilets, a brothel, fountains and various temples. There's also a visit to a carpet manufacturing house.

Kuşadası, Türkiye
Gallipoli – Kusadasi. This morning we enjoy a short guided tour of Troy. The legend of the lost city of Troy and Homer’s poetry was brought to life by it’s rediscovery in 1863. Subsequent excavations revealed nine ancient cities, one on top of the other, dating back to 3000 BC. We enjoy a tour of the ruins and admire a replica of the Trojan wooden horse that, as legend goes, was filled with Aechaean soldiers who helped to sack Troy.
Driving further south we reach the ancient ruins of Pergamum, home to one of the steepest amphitheatres in the classical world. Pergamum was also famous for its Asclepion (medical centre). We continue to Kusadasi on the Aegean Coast via a leather manufacturing house.

Pamukkale, Türkiye
Kusadasi – Pamukkale. Driving east, we arrive at Pamukkale - home of the famous gleaming white calcium terraced pools. Known locally as the Cotton Castles, they're a natural phenomena and gift from Mother Nature. Pamukkale was formed when warm, calcium rich mineral water cascaded over the cliff edge, cooling and depositing in the process. The calcium built natural shelves and pools on the cliffs are known as travertines. Take a barefoot walk along the travertines or opt for a dip in the warm waters of the thermal pool, with its submerged fragments of fluted marble columns.
Our last stop of the day is the ruined spa town of Hierapolis, famed for the curative powers of its mineral springs. These were dammed to create communal baths.

Cappadocia, Türkiye
Pamukkale - Cappadocia. On day 7 we drive to Cappadocia, stopping to visit some ancient caravanserais (roadside inns) such as Sultanhani. Tonight there's a fun optional evening of Turkish folklore.
On day 8 we enjoy a guided tour of Cappadocia - perhaps the jewel in Turkey’s crown. Cappadocia is one of Turkey’s most extraordinary national treasures. The utter improbability of the surreal landscape has to be seen to be believed with its ‘stuff of fables’ cave dwellings and phallic ‘fairy chimneys’ landscape. Whole troglodyte villages, subterranean churches and fortresses have been hewn from the soft, porous, eerily eroded rock of Cappadocia.
A guided tour of the region takes us to the World Heritage listed Goreme Valley. See stunning examples of rock-cut Byzantine churches, chapels and temples. Marvel at Zelve, with its phallic-like eroded landscape. Stopping on the outskirts of Goreme Village we have the opportunity to see Pigeon Valley, where centuries old pigeon houses are carved into the surrounding cliffs. Our tour also takes in the incredible Uchisar castle-mountain. Enjoy marvelous views of Cappadocia from the summit and explore the underground city of Kaymakli.
You'll also have the opportunity to visit an Onyx shop, which specializes in historic jewellery designs that are unique to Turkey and crafted using local materials. For those not interested in shopping, there's time to relax and grab a drink from the local cafe. This evening, we enjoy dinner at the hotel.
