To get to the park, take the RP-34 that sweeps across the Pampa de Achala, an eerily desolate landscape, ideal for solitary treks or horse rides. For the first 15km or so, this road, which starts southwest of Villa Carlos Paz, is quite narrow, but several viewpoints have been built at the roadside. From them, you have unobscured vistas of the Icho Cruz and Malambo valleys to the northwest, the distant peak of Cerro Los Gigantes (at 2374m the highest mountain in the Sierra Grande) to the north, and the Sierra de Achala to the south. Some 20km further on, are the bleak granite moorlands of the Pampa de Achala, reaching just over 2000m above sea level. Here condors, some with wingspans exceeding 3m, can be seen circling majestically overhead. Hikes in the park take between two hours and several days, and there are designated areas where camping (free) is permitted. You should register at the Interpretation Centre (1.5km from the park entrance) before setting out; the centre is also a good place to get useful information about the park and the latest weather conditions. There’s little shade and currently no food or drink on sale within the park boundaries, so bring a hat, sun-cream and sustenance. The hike route is clearly marked with numbered posts, getting steadily more difficult after you pass number ten, which takes you down steep and sometimes slippery paths towards the bottom of the canyon. Many kinds of trees, shrubs and ferns can be spotted, including some endemic species such as rare white gentians, while among the plentiful fauna are various wild cats, frogs, foxes and lizards. Birdlife is prolific but the stars are the condors themselves, especially their young; if you’re lucky you might see condors and their chicks bathing in the water at the bottom of the gorge.

You’ll se how amazing it is the landscape of the Quebrada de Las Conchas. Stay in Cafayate at least 3 nights. I’d recommend the Hotel Posada de Cafayates. It’s an outstanding place! From Cafayate, drive to Jujuy. If you have the stamina and like it, you may visit the Estancia Cerdo Negro, in the city of Cerrillos (which is about 60 km before you pass back in the city of Salta). There they make a wonderful prosciutto and don Quico, the owner, is quite a character. Moving on (you don’t need to sleep in Cerrillos, unless you really want to), you may choose, as I did, to sleep in San Salvador de Jujuy, if you want to avoid driving too long. But you can also decide to go straight to Pumamarca, where you can visit the Cerro de 7 Colores. 1 night there is enough. From Pumamarca you may go to Tilcara (about 40 min drive from Pumamarca), which is indeed a great place. There you have a few attractions (namely La Garaganta del Diablo and the Pucará) in addition to the city itself. But you should also use some time to go from there to Humahuaca (30 min drive), in your way to the Cerro de 14 Colores (about a 1:30h drive) in Hornocal. It’s a day trip from Tilcara, as you see. When deciding on accommodations in Tilcara, think about staying in Solar del Trópico (check them on the internet), in the neighbor “pueblo” of Huacalera, which is a 20 min drive from Tilcara. The thing is: if you stay in Tilcara, you’ll be right in the middle of a cozy, lively, city,. If you decide to stay in Posada del Tropico, you’ll chose to be in a bit more remote location. But my wife and I stayed there and loved it! René, a French fellow, and Analia, his wife, are great hosts (not to mention that René is an artist and the place is charmed by his works; by the way: he cooks very well!). Perhaps you could stay a few days in Tilcara and at least one night with René/Analia. Don’t miss a dinner in a Restaurant called Nuevo Progreso, in Tilcara. The chef there is considered the best in A rgentina, which is no small feat. In case you fancy something more sophisticated (although not more tasteful than Nuevo Progreso), go also have lunch in the Yocoraite Winery. If you accept my advice, go first to Yocoraite, to have lunch, and then to Nuevo Progreso, for dinner (on different days, for sure….). There’s a city called Iruya, that is a 2:30h drive from Tilcara. The city itself is no big deal in my opinion (I should add that many people love the place, though), but it’s encrusted in a magnific “sierra” and is indeed a charming spot. In any event, the road to there is breathtaking, although quite an audacious drive. Although we did it, I wouldn’t recommend to visit Iruya and get back to Tilcara/Huacalera on the same day. If you decide to visit Iruya, spend the night there and drive back the other day. Do some research on the internet and see if it is the kind of thing you’d like to add to your trip. 4 nights, in total (including the one in Iruya), would suffice. From Tilcara, drive back, returning to Pumamarca, aiming to stay in Puerto Colorado, an aboriginal village where you’ll find only one place to stay: Hosteria Posada del Silencio. Is a simple place, although also very clean and comfy. Book in advance and ask for them to prepare an evening meal, as you won’t find any other place there to eat. The idea is for you to visit Salinas Grandes on the same day of you arrival (if you get there early enough) or on the other day. It’s a beautiful Salt Pan that you may visit with the help of local, aboriginal, guide. It is a 15 min drive from Hosteria Posada del Silencio.

Named a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2003, the Quebrada is also home to diverse cultures, with tranquil villages and towns that have retained a strong Indigenous character. There are plenty of hiking routes in the region, some following trails laid down by Inca people centuries ago linking ancient ruins and archaeological sites. Hire a local guide to get a deeper understanding from the experience.

Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile

Getting from Santiago airport to the city was actually fairly easy. There is a bus that departs every 10 minutes to the center (Los Heroes metro station) via Las Rejas, Universidad de Santiago, Pajaritos and Estación Central metro stations. It operates between 6:00 am and 11:30 pm in 10 minutes intervals and during the night in hourly intervals. The bus stop is in front of the airport exit no 4. One way ticket costs 1 900 CLP, return 3 400 CLP. At the airport, you buy the ticket before boarding the bus (you wait in line and there is a man selling the tickets), when going from the center you buy the ticket from the driver. To use metro you need to have a so-called BIP card, there is no way to travel without it. The card itself costs 1 500 CLP and then you need to charge it for the rides, the minimum amount is 1 000 CLP. The metro ride fare depends on the time you are using the metro, varies between 610 and 720 CLP. it’s more expensive at peak hours. You can buy the card at the stations, either in the machine or from the ticket stand. I recommend the second option. Santiago to Valparaiso There are two main companies serving this route, Turbus and Pullman, and they both offer more or less the same standard and price. To get to Valparaiso from Santiago first you need to get to Pajaritos bus station which is directly above the metro station with the same name (L1 red metro line). Once there you go to the ticket office (they are clearly marked with the name of the company) and get your ticket. Mirador de Los Cóndores Best hike near Santiago 11km (7 miles) round trip, 4–5 hours, moderate Climbing to this Andean lookout in the Cajón del Maipo valley near Santiago makes the Chilean capital – and its 7 million residents – feel worlds away. Yet the trailhead is only about an hour beyond the city limits. A moderate ascent up arid Andean foothills, it offers spectacular valley views, as well as a chance to try some nutty goat's cheese sold at a muleteer’s house less than a mile before the summit. The condors, which encircle the cliff at the trail’s end, are the undisputed highlight, wowing hikers with their massive 3m (10.5ft) wingspan. Mirador de Los Cóndores, Cajón del Maipo valley One of the best trekking options near Santiago is the Cajón del Maipo valley, about an hour away from Chile’s capital city. The Mirador de Los Cóndores promises excellent views and, at 2,000m (6,561ft), it won’t cause any high altitude issues. A steady ascent over 3 miles (5km) makes for a pleasant walk through arid Andean mountains, with fantastic valley vistas at all times. Keep an eye out for condors as you approach the summit. There are lovely views of snow-capped Andean peaks from the top, making this a fantastic day trip from Santiago.
Puerto Varas, Chile

Alerce Andino National Park Most visitors to Alerce Andino enter through the park’s northern Sargazo sector. There are several well-marked routes that lead from the park stations, several of them along wooden boardwalks, which in many places protect the roots of the ancient trees from ground compaction caused by hikers. Four trails lead from out from the park office near the Sargazo entrance. Three of these – Los Ulmos, Laguna Sargazo and Alerce Milenario – can be threaded together to make a full day hike. The shortest stretch, Los Ulmos, is particularly recommended by birdwatching, with a good chance of spotting the striking Magellanic woodpecker with its black body and scarlet cap. The Laguna Sargazo trail takes you over a suspension bridge to a small lake fringed with ferns and offering tremendous views, while the Alerce Milenario trail keep its trump card until the end, leading you to one of oldest recorded alerce trees in the park. This majestic tree, standing 60m high with a trunk 4m across is thought to be more than 2500 years old. A popular longer day hike is around 10km to Laguna Frías along the Río Sargazo Valley. This includes the Alerce Milenario trail, but the more remote parts of the route are sometimes closed for maintenance due to their relative remoteness and the effects of the weather and landscape. Saltos del Petrohué Try this 1.6-km out-and-back trail near Puerto Varas, Los Lagos. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 22 min to complete. This is a very popular area for walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. You'll need to leave pups at home — dogs aren't allowed on this trail. An excellent short walk within the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. Even if you are hiking other trails in the area, it is worth adding to your itinerary. First, this beautiful forest trail visits the Petrohué Falls or Saltos de Petrohué, where you can observe the waterfall that is on a base of basaltic lava from the Osorno volcano. You can also visit the waterfall on the Laguna de Los Enamorados, a small lagoon that connects with the Petrohué River through a small stream with the same name. If you are approaching Alerce Andino from the south via Lenca, there are several easy day hikes through the park's Chaica sector. The Salto Río Chaica and Alerce Milenario trail is the most popular, a short half-day hike that takes you through lush forest to a viewing platform overlooking the Chaica waterfall, and another of the park’s most ancient alerce trees. If you’re only making a brief visit, the El Encanto and Los Canelos trails are two short walks designed to give you a taste of the park. Drive to Caraterra Austral You will also have beautiful views of the Osorno Volcano!However, we’d instead recommend heading slightly north out of Puerto Montt (if that’s where you’re picking up your rental vehicle) to Ensanada and then taking the V-69 road south from there.

However, we’d instead recommend heading slightly north out of Puerto Montt (if that’s where you’re picking up your rental vehicle) to Ensanada and then taking the V-69 road south from there. The V-69 eventually meets Ruta 7 at Puelche and then runs down to Hornopirén where you have no choice but to take a ferry. For many, this four-hour crossing through the fiord to Leptepu is one of the highlights of the trip. But it doesn’t end there. From Leptepu there’s a fifteen-minute drive across the peninsula to Fiordo Largo, where a further 45-minute ferry crossing will take you to Caleta Gonzalo and the beginning of the Carretera Austral proper. The gravel road leads from Caleta Gonzalo to the port of Chaitén, where daily ferries connect this part of northern Patagonia to southern Patagonia, Chiloé and Puerto Montt to the north. It’s flanked on either side by the glorious rainforest-filled Parque Nacional Pumalín, The Cascadas Escondidas trail is situated just 14 kilometres south of Caleta Gonzales and is accessible directly from its namesake campsite. It’s a two-hour loop track through thick, mossy rainforest filled with ancient trees and home to three waterfalls. If it’s wet (which it often is), the trail can be quite hazardous. And it can get quite steep at times. But if the idea of losing yourself in an enchanted forest tickles your fancy then this is for you. To visit, you’ll need to head to Puñihuil beach, where you can board a boat and sail around the colonies. At the beach, you’ll find a fishing dock where three local families have come together to offer boat rides (from September to March, when the penguins arrive) and other ecotourism services. Boat rides last between 30 and 40 minutes.

Nearby, woven baskets are sold at the craft fair. The Museum of Modern Art Chiloé displays works by Chilean artists. must-see attractions located inland and on the western coast. These include Lake Huillinco, the small town of Cucao (and the Muelle de las Almas pier), and Chiloé National Park. Most visitors don’t have that much time though, and a short visit is still very much possible. There are a number of shorter hiking trails that can be done in an hour or less, and those are found at the park’s main entrance, just south of Cucao (there are 3 entrances in total, but this is the primary one). At this entrance, you’ll find the park administration office and a small visitor center along with educational trails. There are picnic and camping areas run by the native Huilliche communities. Entrance tickets must be bought ahead of time and online through the dedicated website. Tepuhueico Park Heading south for about 6 miles from Cucao and you’ll reach the parking lot from where a 45-minute trail will take you to the Muelle de las Almas (Pier of the Souls). This is a recently built wooden walkway that is based on a local legend that tells how the souls of the dead would wait in this symbolic pier for the mythical boatman to take them on their last journey into the spirit world. This has become a popular trek and photo opportunity among locals and visitors alike, so you might have to wait in line for a while to experience it. Entrance tickets for Tepuhueico Park must be purchased on their website.

Sendero de los Arrayanes | Easy, 2-3 hours | Trailhead leaves right from the parking lot you’ll see on the left 1 km after Puerto Panuelo, a short, flat walk to the beach of Lago Moreno, about 45 minutes to an hour each way depending on your pace. About 20 minutes into the trail you’ll see a short loop through Arrayan forest. Cerro Llao Llao | Easy, 2-3 hours | Trailhead is off the main road just past the parking lot, park in the lot or parallel to the main road at the trailhead. 45 min to an hour to ascend to the top of the Llao Llao hill for gorgeous views. More challenging than Arrayanes but still on the easy side. Villa Tacul | Easy, 3 hours | This is the same trail as Llao Llao for the most part but instead of detouring to the left, you continue onwards to Villa Tacul and it’s gorgeous beaches. Brazo Tristeza | Easy, 2 hours | Trail starts off of the Hotel Alún Nehuén parking lot further down the road from the above trails, uphill the whole way but not challenging. La Trochita, Esquel Costing a princely sum of around US$12, La Trochita – Argentina’s legendary narrow-gauge steam train, immortalized by Paul Theroux in The Old Patagonian Express – chugs its way from Esquel to Nahuel Pan, some 20km (12.5 miles, 45 minutes) away, and back again at a leisurely speed of around 30kph (18mph). Until 1993, it ran as far as Ingeniero Jacobacci, 402km (250 miles) away, but these days it’s a short trip down nostalgia lane for train buffs through a landscape of scrubland-covered hills.

In a south Argentinian town named after a 19th-century Welsh settler, this outstanding paleontological museum (entry fee US$8) features Patagonia’s most important local dinosaur skeletons, such as the Patagosaurus, Tehuelchesaurus and an unusual short-necked sauropod, Brachytrachelopan mesai. The tour de force is the remains of the Patagotitan mayorum, thought to be the largest dinosaur ever to have walked the Earth, discovered in 2012.
Ushuaia, Argentina

A short drive from the city of Ushuaia, the park has several easy-to-navigate trails that can be completed in a day or less. Popular routes include the 3km (1.8-mile) Senda Hito XXIV, which leads to the border with Chile and the 5km (3.1-mile) hike up Cerro Guanaco, whose 970m (3182ft) summit offers superb views of Lago Roca. If you want something longer, there’s the 8km (4.9-mile) Senda Costera, which traces the shorelines of Ensenada and Lapataia Bays. Whichever trail you choose, keep your eyes peeled for birds: the park is home to Magellanic woodpeckers, austral parakeets and green-backed firecrown hummingbirds, among many other species. Sendero Glacier Martial, Ushuaia Catch one of the frequent minibusses from the corner of Av Maipú and Juana Fadul in downtown Ushuaia to the Cerro Martial ski complex, 7km (4.3 miles) away from the city. From here, a trail winds its way up to lookout point (40 minutes one way), where you are treated to unobstructed views of the world’s southernmost city, its steep streets descending towards the choppy waters of the Beagle Channel and the smallish glacier after which the trail takes its name.

Located on the Strait of Magellan, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, it's often used as base for excursions to the surrounding wilderness and Antarctica. The Plaza Muñoz Gamero has a memorial to explorer Ferdinand Magellan, and the Museo Nao Victoria features a replica of one of his galleons.

Near the remnants of the wooden pier, you’re likely to spot cormorants and black-necked swan. There are several sculptures worth your time too, including one of a giant hand.

Starting from the access road to the exclusive Explora Patagonia, this short trail isn’t really open to non-guests of the hotel, but if you’re sneaky enough, you can wander around to the back of the hotel for exceptional views of Lago Pehoé and Los Cuernos. Views from Salto Chico north across Lago Pehoé and the Los Cuernos mountains can be experienced from just outside Explora Patagonia. The trail climbs up, slowly at first, and with a steep final gradient to reach a viewpoint that offers one of the national park’s most ubiquitous (and spectacular!) views. Expect sweeping vistas of Lago Pehoé and the serrated, horn-shaped Los Cuernos mountains as they rear out of the Cordillera Paine range. You might even catch a glimpse of the Southern Patagonia Ice Field in the northwest (Glaciar Grey is one of its tongues), or the gleaming waters of Lago Sarmiento de Gamboa out east. The views from Mirador Condor are some of the most spectacular in the park.
