The festival is definitely suitable for the kids, not a problem at all. One thing to note is that it does get very busy and crowded and therefore going early is recommended. Doing the rough way you can go early, find yourself a place to sit on the pavement and watch it by the roadside and this is free of charge. The more comfortable way of doing it would be to book a seat at many of the roadside restaurants and hotels so to speak. I have always gone and sat/stood on the pavement and watched it but with kids might be a handful.
In a nutshell it is a very long procession starting around 8pm and finishing around say midnight with dancers, drummers, elephants and many many others. You go for the procession, watch it and come back. There aren't any other festivities as such. For example, like a Christmas market in Europe :-)

He can organise all your transportation and you can communicate directly with him. He is from Kandy itself while I am based in Colombo.
