Staying with the Hmong community and trekking in Sapa
This wasn't just one of the best things that I did in Vietnam, but in my whole 4 years of travel.
I left this experience feeling so full of happiness and welcomed into their family.
How did it happen?
Getting off the bus in Sapa, I was approached by a young lady asking if I wanted to go trekking.
I did!
Two days later we met up again, me not knowing anything about what l'd be doing apart from that it was 3 days of trekking and l'd be staying with her family.
And that's exactly what we did! We hiked through rice fields and villages in the mountains above Sapa.
While the weather wasn't great, blocking most of the views, it was much more about the company.
At night, we'd cook together and play with the children.
Dinner was always a feast, followed by happy water (if you know, you know)
During this experience, I learnt so much about the Hmong community and the lives of the women here. It was fascinating and incredibly eye-opening, but at times shocking when I compared it to my life and views it through the Western lens we often apply to things.
If you really want to immerse yourself amongst locals in Northern Vietnam, this is the perfect way to do it!
It's truly an experience l'll never forget.
