Bussen naar de Mekong Delta
Hoewel er 12 provincies zijn die deel uitmaken van de Mekong Delta, is de
gebruikelijke route voor de meeste toeristen om deze bestemming te bereiken van
Ho Chi Minh City naar Can Tho. Het kost ongeveer drie uur om de Mekong Delta te
bereiken met de bus.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Je reisroute door Cambodja begint in de hoofdstad Phnom Penh. Hier vind je veel
moderne winkels, maar ook historie en zelfs een bierbrouwerij.
Daarnaast zijn de Killing Fields een must visit. De hoofdstad van Cambodja heeft
een behoorlijk heftige geschiedenis. Toen de Red Khmer aan de macht kwam werden
2 miljoen mensen vermoord en de stad verwoest.
Als je in Phnom Penh bent moet je zeker een bezoek brengen aan de Tuol Sleng
gevangenis en de Killing fields. Je wordt hier nog keihard geconfronteerd met
iets wat je helemaal niet wilt zien. Deze donkere kant hoort helaas wel bij
Cambodja en hoort eigenlijk wel bij je bezoek aan dit land.
Andere bijzonderheden of bezienswaardigheden in Phnom Penh zijn het Koninklijk
paleis – Wat Preah Keo of ‘de zilveren pagode – en de bierbrouwerij Kingdom
Brewerieswaar je een rondleiding kan krijgen.
Ook op zoek gaan naar Street Art en het bezoeken van de food market vinden wij
een must visit in Phnom Penh.
Tip: bekijk de film ´First they killed my father´ - het geeft je een uitstekend
beeld van hoe het leven er tijdens het Rode Khmer-regime werkelijk uitzag.

Krong Kampot, Cambodia
Kampot is een rustig stadje aan de rivier Preaek Tuek Chhu en een mooie
bestemming voor backpackers. Je kunt in Kampot veel leuke activiteiten
ondernemen zoals suppen op de rivier, een brommer huren en de omgeving verkennen
en een uitstapje maken naar het nabijgelegen vissersdorpje Kep.
In Kampot vind je ook de prachtige zout ‘farms’, een lotus pond, een
nabijgelegen natuurpark met een verlaten casino waar je zeker met je brommer
heen moet rijden, en veel leuke koffietentjes.
In Kampot sliepen wij in guesthouse Ganesha Kampot Ecohouse, iets buiten het
centrum van Kampot. In hun eigen restaurant proberen ze zoveel mogelijk
ingrediënten van hun eigen tuin te gebruiken, recyclen ze zoveel mogelijk
plastic, maken ze gebruik van eigen compost en kun je je waterfles bijvullen via
hun watertank.

Koh Rong, Cambodia
De eilanden Koh Rong en het kleinere Koh Rong Samloem hebben belachelijk witte
stranden. Deze eilanden mogen daarom ook niet ontbreken in je reisroute door
Cambodja. Het grootste eiland is Koh Rong, waar ook veel meer te doen is dan Koh
Rong Samloem. Er zijn op Koh Rong veel feestjes, party hostels en bars te
vinden, maar je kunt ook op het rustige deel van het eiland verblijven dat haast
onbewoond lijkt te zijn. Helaas was ik zelf een paar dagen ziek op Koh Rong en
achteraf las ik dat het eiland erom bekend staat dat je voedselvergiftiging kunt
oplopen. Uitkijken dus.
Een van de leuke dingen die je kan doen op Koh Rong is het spotten van
lichtgevend plankton, snorkelen en duiken of een boottour doen (naar Koh Rong
Samloem).
In Sihanoukville kun je overal wel een kaartje kopen voor de ferry naar Koh Rong
en Koh Rong Samloen. Een retour kost je zo’n 20 dollar. Wij kochten ons ticket
bij de Speed Ferry Cambodia, naast Koh Rong Dive Center aan de Ochheuteal
street. Deze straat loopt door in de de Serendipity Beach Street, dat uitkomt op
de haven. Overigens mag je met het retourticket zelf weten wanneer je terug wilt
reizen, dit kun je namelijk in Sihanoukville zelf doorgeven. Wij deden dat een
dag van te voren.
! Sihanoukville zelf geen aanrader om te bezoeken - enkel gebruiken om door te
reizen!
Wij sliepen in het Ta Kloy Tip Bungalow met een mooi zwembad. Wil je een mooie
zonsondergang en barbequen? Loop dan naar het Sunshine Cafe aan Otres Beach.

Siem Reap Province, Cambodia
Siem Reap is je basis voor een bezoek aan de Angkor tempels. Maar in de stad
zelf is ook van alles te ondernemen.
Het toerisme in Siem reap is behoorlijk gegroeid en je vindt dan ook veel
restaurants met een Westers interieur. Als je in Siem Reap bent zorg dan dat je
de nightmarket niet overslaat, uiteraard de Angkor tempels bezoekt, een biertje
doet in Pub Street en een vogelspin proeft (yep, die zijn daar).

Don Det, Laos

TO DO IN DON DET
Day 1: The main activity is going on a full-day kayak tour on the Mekong
River which brings you to the major sights of the area, first and foremost Khone
Phapheng Falls, the widest waterfalls in the world and the largest waterfalls in
Asia.
Day 2: If you’re looking for a more low-key activity, you can rent a bicycle and
ride over to Don Khon to see the Li Phi Somphamit Waterfalls.

Day 6: Today is the day to go tipsy tubing. It’s a Vang Vieng staple and should
not be missed.
If you still have some energy (and money) left in the evening, you can head on
a hot air balloon tour or go paramotoring.**
Day 7: This is the day for the three things Vang Vieng does best: Viewpoints,
lagoons, and caves. You can either rent a motorbike or hire a tuk-tuk which is
reasonably priced if you share it. There are too many options to mention but we
loved Nam Xay Viewpoint(the Instagram famous one with the bikes, still it was
not crowded at all), cave tubing in Tham Nam (Water Cave), and Lagoon 4 to
relax.

6. DAY 8 & 9 – LUANG PRABANG
The two highlights of Luang Prabang are the beautiful old town – including a lot
of nice cafes (which especially hit the spot when you’re travelling long term)
and the Kuang Si Waterfalls.

TO DO IN LUANG PRABANG
Day 1: Get up early and head to the almsgiving ceremony. Around sunrise,
Buddhist monks walk the streets to receive alms from the community. While this
ceremony is increasingly commercialised, it’s still interesting to see.
Combine the almsgiving with a visit to the morning market.
Spend the rest of the day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang
Prabang. 800 buildings, such as sacred buildings, colonial buildings and
traditional houses on stilts are listed by UNESCO.
For sunset, head to Mount Phousi for a great view over the city – expect to see
a crowd.
Day 2: This day is reserved for the Kuang Si Falls, which many call the most
beautiful waterfalls in Asia. The journey takes around 1 hour by minivan or
shared tuk-tuk. You do want to spend some time here as there are several
swimming pools and picnic spots.
For sunset, head on a Mekong River cruise.
Of course, you shouldn’t miss the amazing night market for dinner.

We strongly advise you to take the new high-speed train

ride takes less than two hours whereas the ride with a van will take you around
eight hours on a super bumpy road.

7. DAY 10, 11, & 12 – NONG KHIAW
The best thing to do in Nong Khiaw is do an overnight hike! There are plenty of

Day 10: If you’re not saving your energy for the following two days of hiking,
there are many amazing viewpoints in the area.
Day 11: You’ll start the 2 day trek by walking a bit through the countryside.
Lunch will be served in a traditional village. Our personal highlight came in
the evening after an afternoon of hard and hot hiking. We
just loved our homestay. The family was super friendly, we were taught how to
cook super delicious food, we played with the children although there was no
common language – and there were puppies.
Day 12: On the second day of the trek, you’ll be teamed up with some day
trippers. First, you’ll hike up Phanoi Viewpoint which comes with a cave.
Afterwards, you’ll hike to Tad Mook Waterfalls to cool down. The tour ends with
some kayaking on the Nam Ou River.

Het kleine eiland Koh Tao is onderdeel van de Chumphon Archipel en is van
oudsher een van de meest populaire plekken om te duiken in Thailand. Het is ook
een van de goedkoopste bestemmingen voor beginners om het PADI certificaat te
halen. Het water is het hele jaar door warm en kalm.
Verwacht naast prachtig koraal en zeeschildpadden ook veel barracuda’s en
pijlstaartroggen. Walvishaaien laten zich soms zien in deze wateren. De meeste
kans heb je tussen februari en mei. Dit eiland is ook een van de beste plekken
om te snorkelen in Thailand. Op veel plekken kun je zo vanaf het strand naar een
koraalrif zwemmen.

baracuda’s maar ook verschillende soorten haaien.

Duiken in Koh Phi Phi kan het hele jaar door. De beste omstandigheden vind je
tussen november en mei maar ook tijdens het laagseizoen is het goed duiken. Het
zicht is minder maar de enorme hoeveelheid plankton in het water trekt tijdens
dit laagseizoen juist weer heel veel vissen aan.
* The islands of Koh Phi Phi, located in the Andaman Sea, between Phuket and
Koh Lanta, are one of the most beautiful places to visit in Thailand.
These islands are well-known thanks to the movie “The Beach”, featuring Leonardo
Di Caprio. The famous Maya Bay Beach on Koh Phi Phi Leh has quickly become the
place to see during a tour in Southern Thailand.
Over 8 years, nearly 5,000 visitors walked up and down the beach every day.
As you can probably guess, this mass tourism had disastrous consequences for the
local ecosystem and the corals. It got so bad that the Thai authorities had to
take action, and thus the beach has been closed to the public since 2018.
But don’t worry, you can still see the beach from the boat during your day-trip!
There are also some very beautiful beaches on Koh Phi Phi Don, the second
island. Here again, you can enjoy many activities: water-skiing, wakeboarding,
paddle boarding, scuba diving or snorkeling. Rock climbing is also quite
popular.
You will have no difficulty finding accommodation on the island, given the
ever-increasing number of hotels or youth hostels.
You will also have no problem finding places to go out and party. Koh Phi Phi is
very lively and its nightlife is one of the best in Thailand!
However, if you’re looking for peace & quiet, you’d be better off visiting
another island in Thailand.
