- [ ] Travelling down East Coast
We hired a van from Awesome Campers (picked up in Cairns) - Buddy camper (Nissan Elgard 51) - was perfect size for us as a couple, bit too close for 2 mates travelling
https://www.awesomecampers.com.au/vehicle-manuals/
Things defo need for van
- camp chairs
- Camp table
- Bug candle
- Tupperwares
- Cool bag/box
- Kitchen roll
- Tea towels
Mission beach
- First drove 2 hours to mission beach and stayed at mission beach hideaway which is 5 mins from beach
- Did sky dive here, reckon best place to do it as guaranteed to land on the beach every time, sky dive was £270 with the photos and videos which you should defo get as well
Townsville (magnetic island)
- 3 hour drive from mission beach to Townsville - On way from mission beach we stopped at big crystal creek where you can swim and sunbathe, has a bbq and benches as well and a toilet building (other places you could stop at would be journa falls and wallaman falls recommended by our skydive instructor)
- Not much to do in Townsville, we only stayed to get over to magnetic island.
Magnetic island
- Did a day trip (morning of going round on boat & snorkelling) which finished at 1 and then had the afternoon to explore, got a bus ($1 day pass per person) to forts walk - a 2km walk that takes 1.5 hours to walk and best place to see Koalas and views over island
- If we had longer would have wanted to stay over on the island for a night as apparently you can see wallabies on one of the beaches at sunset
Airlie beach
- 3.5 hr drive from Mission beach to airlie beach, we stopped off at The big Mango & Bowen bay which was good place to stop for lunch, free parking on bay
- Airlie beach we stayed at Nomads (hostel & campsite) which was really good location and loads of other travellers staying there - very busy
Whitsundays
- Did day tour to whitsundays, if doing day tour defo do through Big Fury. Three stops, snorkelling for 45 mins then 2 hours (including a good lunch) on Whitehaven beach which has unreal white sands and then a view point with best views over the blue water and white sands
Airlie beach - Rockhampton stop offs
- Cape Hillsborough national park (nice beach and can see kangaroos/wallabies if lucky - we didn’t though)
- Mackay - busy city, only stopped off at shopping centre to go Coles for a food shop
- Clareview Dugong Sanctuary - another nice beach with mangrove trees underwater, good walk down beach (we saw loads of turtles in the water, didn’t see any Dugong though)
Rockhampton
- Stayed at a free campsite outside of Rockhampton called Yaamba rest area which was good for free, had a public toilet block and another outbuilding
Stop offs Rockhampton - Hervey Bay
- Seventeen Seventy - good spot to stop for lunch, free campsite at end of the bay and good area to look for whales (July-October). Quite far off the A1 so only go if you have time
- Agnes Water - 10 min drive from seventeen seventy, another small town with a beach (didn’t stay long here as had to get to Hervey bay but looked quite nice)
- Bundaburg - bigger city, only stopped to do a food shop and get alcohol for Fraser Island tour (cheap liquor store) also home of Bundaburg rum & ginger beer
Hervey bay
- Stayed 2 nights in Hervey bay either side of our Fraser Island tour, would have liked to spend more time as looked like a nice place but didn’t have a chance to look around
Fraser (K’Gari) Island
- Defo worth going to, loads of beaches, driving through rainforest on sand tracks, dingoes (wild dogs) and lakes to swim in
- Have to do through tour, can’t really do it on your own
- We booked a 2 day 1 night tour to Fraser Island through ‘Fraser island dingoes 4WD adventure’
- Company was really good, good food, nice resort location and did everything we wanted to do
- If want to do 3 day 2 night tour either do through ours or we heard Pippies was a good company to go through
Drove to Noosa and stopped off at
- Tin Can bay - drove here early for dolphin feeding (7/8am start)
- Rainbow beach - only stopped off here and walked down the beach for an hour cause we needed to get to Noosa
Noosa
- Stayed at the scout campsite - (we found it difficult to find campsites in the centre), was cheap & has kitchen/toilet block
- Cool shop called ‘Australia the gift’
- Fairypool walk, do the coastal walk - nice walk round the Noosa coast line (saw dolphins) - takes about 2 hours
- Really nice town with a high street and coffee shops worth staying for a couple nights
Sunshine Coast
- We didn’t stay on Sunshine Coast but drove through Coolum which was a really nice beach town
Australia Zoo
- we stayed in Landsborough holiday park campsite which was 4 min drive to the zoo
- Had a really good day here, the zoo opens at 9am - 5pm and if you book online you can pay $2 to see inside the hospital
- There’s talks in the zoo where they feed the animals so check the zoo map
- The main croc show was very good so plan your day around that at 1:15pm
