Best option would be to fly to Hanoi as the roads are horrific in Laos and the bus journeys are uncomfortable and far too long.

You Can easily book with a hostel to do the ha giang loop. We went with cheers hostel and it was really good and not a massive group. Would recommend doing it this way as everything is sorted for you, travel there, accommodation etc.
