Drive from Montreux to Täsch (the last car-permitted village), park at the Täsch Park and Ride facility, then take the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn shuttle train (12 minutes) into car-free Zermatt. Take the Gornergrat rack railway for panoramic Alpine scenery, or ride the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car to Europe's highest cable car station at 3,883 m. Collect rental car from Täsch and drive north through the Bernese Oberland to Grindelwald, set beneath the dramatic north face of the Eiger.
