Chiang mai to Laos options
Slow boat to Luang Prabang
From border Huay Xai
you take a bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong, the closest town on the Thai side of the border.
Day 1 travel on the slow boat from Huay Xai to Pak Beng. The journey should take around 7-8 hours.
Stay overnight in Pak Beng. Most people don’t book accommodation in advance here, but the good stuff gets snapped up quickly and there are reports of rats in some of the less desirable accommodation! Book here to be on the safe side
Day 2 travel by slow boat from Pak Beng to Luang Prabang. The journey should take between 7-8 hours.
Get overnight bus from Chiang Mai to Vientiene (captial)
There are no direct buses to Vientiane so you will first need to get one from Chiang Mai to the border at Nong Khai. This journey takes around 12 hours and costs around 750THB.
As soon as you get to Nong Khai and disembark from the bus, there will be a a group of tuk tuk drivers hanging around offering to bring you to the border. The price should be around 50THB, don’t pay more than 80.
If anyone approaches you asking you to pay for application forms say no, you can get them free at the application desk.

If going to Vietnam from Laos, you can take an overnight bus to Hanoi or a quick flight from Vientiane. If flying, keep in mind that there are only direct flights a few times a week (otherwise you must connect through Bangkok), so plan ahead if going with that option.

Hanoi -> Ninh Binh (1-2 hours)
Bus: You will find plenty of buses traveling from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. Most hostels and hotels will be able to book a bus for you which includes hotel pick up, and it should cost between 200,000 – 250,000 VND / $8.50 – $10.70.
Train: 6-7 trains leave from Hanoi to Ninh Binh railway station every day, of which SE5 is the most popular option as it offers very convenient travel times. Soft seats sell between 73,000 VND / $3.10 and 99,000 VND / $4.25. Though you also have the option of booking a sleeper berth from 115,000 VND / $4.90.

If you want to travel by train you will need to travel to Hue to Da Nang by train and then transfer from Da Nang to Hoi An by bus or taxi.
However, the way I highly recommend is to do a Jeep Tour over the Hai Van Pass. This will turn a mundane few hours into an exciting few, checking out some more of the incredible landscapes, and roads, Vietnam has to offer.

Mui Ne -> Ho Chi Minh (5ish hours)
Train: If you want to take the train you will also need to account to travel to Mui Ne from the Phan Thiet train station. This takes between twenty to thirty minutes.
This route will also have you backtracking slightly. There is only one train that operates on this route daily, leaving Phan Thiet railway station at 13:20 and arriving in Ho Chi Minh at 17:35.
Bus: The journey from Mui Ne to Ho Chi Minh City by bus takes around 5 hours. Though this timeframe can vary depending on how often the bus stops and for how long. Personally, I have done this route with The Sinh Tourist and had a stress-free experience.

Nha Trang -> Mui Ne (4-5hours)
Train: The train ride will take around 4 and a half hours from Nha Trang to Mui Ne. However, you will also need to account to travel to Mui Ne from the Phan Thiet train station. This takes between twenty to thirty minutes. This route will also have you backtracking slightly. Prices start at around 120,000 VND / $5.10 for a soft seater journey.
Bus: The journey from Nha Trang to Mui Ne by bus takes around 5 hours. Though this timeframe can vary depending on how often the bus stops and for how long. Personally, I have done this route with The Sinh Tourist and had a stress-free experience.

Getting the Ferry from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong
There are five ferry companies operating the route from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong, so finding a time that suits you is no challenge. I recommend buying a return ticket as it will be slightly cheaper than two one-way tickets – just notify the ferry company 24 hours before you want to return to the mainland and they will confirm the ferry pick up for you.
