You must have a permit to visit Coyote Buttes North (The Wave) and Coyote Buttes South. Permits are available for day use only. There is a daily limit on permits. Permits for Coyote Buttes North (The Wave) are offered through a lottery.
This hike, while relatively short, can be extremely unforgiving, and even deadly if hikers do not come prepared and don't pay attention.
Can you drive to The Wave Utah?
Most of the time, it is possible to reach the trailhead in a two-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicle. However, four-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicles may be required when the road is wet. During the rainy season and the winter, the road may become impassable for all vehicles, even those with four-wheel drive.
The Wave Arizona hike is located in the Paria Cayon- Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness Area, managed by the BLM. It was notated as ecologically sensitive, so only SIXTY-FOUR people are allowed to hike it per day. After going, I will say- it's 100% worth the hype.
Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3 h 11 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.
How to get there. Vermilion Cliffs National Monument on the Arizona–Utah border protects The Wave rock formation. Start your hike at the Wire Pass Trailhead, which is 8.4 miles south of U.S. Highway 89 on House Rock Valley Road—roughly halfway between Kanab, Utah, and Page, Arizona.
