IJEN BLUE FIRE NIGHT HIKE ⭐⭐⭐:THE EXPERIENCE:
Hike up volcano in middle of night to see blue flames (sulfuric gas ignites, glows electric blue), then sunrise from crater rim
ITINERARY:
12:30am: Wake up (yes, MIDNIGHT!), coffee, dress warm
1:00am: Drive to Paltuding base (trailhead, 1,800m)
1:30am: Start hike UP (3km, 1.5-2 hours, steep, dark, headlamp essential, guide helps)
3:00am: Reach crater rim (2,386m), descend INTO crater (200m down steep path, slippery rocks, guide mandatory)
3:30am: BLUE FIRE - See sulfur flames glowing electric blue (only visible in darkness!), miners working nearby, otherworldly, photos difficult (no flash or blue disappears), 30-45 min watching
4:15am: Climb back UP to crater rim (exhausting! Steep! Take breaks!)
5:00am: Wait at rim for sunrise
5:30am: SUNRISE over turquoise crater lake (acidic lake, stunning color, sulfur smoke, beautiful), Mt Merapi volcano visible in distance
6:00am: Descend volcano back to base (1.5 hours down)
7:30am: Return accommodation, breakfast, SLEEP (exhausted!)
WHAT TO BRING:
MASK/BANDANA (ESSENTIAL!) - Sulfur gas at crater TOXIC (eyes burn, cough, suffocating without mask), guides provide basic masks or bring own
Warm layers (jacket, long pants, hat) - Cold at night 5-10°C + wind
Gloves (optional but nice for scrambling rocks into crater)
Headlamp (MUST HAVE - dark hike)
Good shoes (hiking boots or trail runners, steep + slippery)
Water + snacks
Camera (difficult to photograph blue fire, but crater lake sunrise = beautiful)
BOOKING:
Tour package £15-25 per person (includes pick-up, guide, entrance fee, masks)
Guide MANDATORY - Crater descent dangerous (slippery, toxic gas, easy to get lost in dark), don't attempt solo
Book in Banyuwangi/Sempol on arrival OR pre-book with Bromo tour package
DIFFICULTY:
Challenging - Steep uphill 2 hours (altitude 2,386m), then steep descent INTO crater 200m (scary in dark, loose rocks), then climb back OUT (most exhausting part, gasping for air, sulfur fumes), then hike down mountain
Need decent fitness (harder than Bromo, similar to Mt Batur Bali)
Altitude + sulfur = breathless, take it slow
Worth it? ABSOLUTELY - blue fire = rare phenomenon (only few places in world), unforgettable
SULFUR MINERS:
Men carry 70-90kg sulfur loads UP from crater, DOWN mountain (brutal labor, earns £8-12 per day)
See them working at night (breaking sulfur chunks near blue fire, filling baskets)
Respectful photos OK (they're used to tourists, some pose for tips £1-2)
Humbling/sobering experience (realize privilege, their working conditions harsh)
ALTERNATIVE (if blue fire not priority):
Sunrise hike only (start 3:30am, skip crater descent, just view lake from rim, easier, less dramatic)
Most people do blue fire + sunrise (full experience)
TRANSPORT OUT:
To Bali (Denpasar): Banyuwangi → Gilimanuk ferry (1 hour, £2), bus across Bali to Denpasar (4 hours), OR fly Banyuwangi → Denpasar (1 hour, £40-60 if flight exists)
To Flores (Labuan Bajo): Fly Banyuwangi → Bali → Labuan Bajo OR bus to Bali → fly Bali → Labuan Bajo
Easiest: Arrange transport back to Bali through tour, fly Bali → Labuan Bajo
SUGGESTED TIMING:
Ijen blue fire hike ends ~7:30-8am
Return accommodation, shower, breakfast, depart by 11am-12pm
Travel to Bali same day (full day travel, arrive Bali evening)
Sleep Bali, fly to Flores next morning
PRACTICAL:
Ijen = most physically demanding volcano (Bromo easier, Batur easiest, Ijen hardest)
Sulfur smell STRONG (mask essential, some people can't handle it, most adapt)
Blue fire = dependent on wind (if wind blows sulfur smoke toward you, can't see blue, can't breathe, need to retreat and wait)
December = dry season (good visibility, less rain, clear sunrise)
Sleep afternoon after hike (exhausted from midnight wake-up + intense hike)
PHOTOS:
Blue fire (difficult! No flash, long exposure needed, most phones struggle, GoPro/DSLR better)
Turquoise crater lake at sunrise (STUNNING, easier photo, great light)
Sulfur miners working (respectful distance, ask permission, tip £1-2 if pose)

Largest living lizard (2-3m long, 70-90kg, prehistoric, monitor lizard family)
Venomous (saliva contains bacteria + toxins, bite = infection + blood thinning, prey dies slowly)
Can run 20km/hr in short bursts (but lazy, mostly lie around)
Feed on deer, buffalo, smaller dragons (cannibalistic!)
Female dragons can reproduce asexually (parthenogenesis, no male needed)
Rangers keep you safe (stick scares dragons, know their behavior, if dragon gets close = move calmly away, NO running)
Rules: Stay 3-5m away, don't run, listen to ranger, women on period stay back (dragons smell blood), no loud noises

Penida Island, Indonesia
Fly from Manado to Bali (Denpasar) for a 2.5-hour flight, arriving in the afternoon or evening.
Spend a night near Sanur, a ferry port for Nusa Penida.
The next morning, take a fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida, a 45-minute journey costing £10-15 one way. Boats depart every 9am, 10:30am, 12pm and 2pm from multiple companies like Maruti and Sugriwa.
Nusa Penida is an island off Bali’s southeast coast, renowned for its dramatic limestone cliffs and the iconic Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Cliff). It’s also famous for manta ray snorkelling and its stunning turquoise waters.
Where to Stay:
- Ped Village: Located near the ferry arrival port and centrally situated, it’s a great base for exploring.
- Toya Pakeh: Situated on the north coast, it’s just a 10-minute drive from Ped.
- Crystal Bay: Located on the west coast, it offers beach access and is a popular choice.
Budget guesthouses range from £8 to £15 per night, offering basic but adequate accommodation.
The island is quite basic, with limited electricity hours in some places and cold showers. Book your accommodation in advance, especially during December when it’s busier.
Renting a scooter is essential, costing £5-8 per day. The sites are spread out and the roads are rough, hilly and challenging, but doable. Alternatively, you can hire a driver for £20-30 per day, which is easier if you’re nervous about driving.
Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Cliff): ⭐⭐⭐
This is the most iconic photo spot on Nusa . The cliff is shaped like a T-Rex, and the turquoise bay below is stunning. The white sand beach is also beautiful.
It’s a 45-minute scooter ride from Ped on the south coast. There’s a viewpoint with a £2 entry fee, and a 5-minute walk to the cliff edge. This is the shot everyone wants, so be prepared for crowds.
Descending the beach is a 300-plus step climb down a steep cliff, taking 30-45 minutes down and 45-60 minutes up. It’s exhausting, hot and dangerous if you’re careless. The beach is empty, but the climb back up is brutal.
Recommend: Viewpoint only. The photo is from the top and the beach isn’t worth the effort.
Best Timing: 9-11am for good light and fewer crowds up, or 4-5pm for sunset light and golden hues.
ANGEL’S BILLABONG + BROKEN BEACH:
These two sites are side by side on the west coast, just a 5-minute walk apart, and are 30 minutes from Kelingking.
Angel’s Billabong:
This is a natural infinity pool set in rocks with turquoise water. You can swim here if the tide is calm, but check the tide schedule as it can be dangerous at high tide. People have been swept away. Only swim during low tide! Photos can be taken from the edge.
Broken Beach:
This is a natural arch in a cliff with a circular bay. It’s beautiful but don’t swim here as the currents are dangerous.
Entry Fee: £2 combined for both sites.
Total Visit Time: 1 hour.
CRYSTAL BAY:
This beach is great for swimming and snorkelling. It has coral, fish and a generally calm bay. It’s also a great spot for sunset. There are diving and snorkelling operators here who can arrange manta ray trips. There are restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere.
Entry Fee: Free beach access.
MANTA POINT SNORKELING ⭐⭐⭐:
This is a must-do activity! You can snorkel with manta rays, just like Komodo dragons! Book a tour from any shop on the island for £20-30 per person. The tour is half-day and includes a boat, snorkel gear and a guide. You’ll see 2-3 spots, including Manta Bay and Manta Point, where you can see mantas feeding and gliding below you. You’ll also stop at Gamat Bay (a coral garden) and Wall Point (where you can see turtles). The total trip is 3-4 hours long and the boat will pick you up from your accommodation.
ATUH BEACH + DIAMOND BEACH:
These beaches are on the east coast and are remote and stunning.
Atuh Beach:
This beach has white sand, turquoise water, rock formations and is great for swimming. There are 300 steps down to the beach, but it’s easier than Kelingking. It’s beautiful.
Diamond Beach:
This beach is nearby and has similar features to Atuh Beach. It has white sand, cliff views and stairs down.
Entry Fee: £2 each.
Total Visit Time: 1 hour.
Scooter Ride:
There’s a 1-hour scooter ride from Ped to either beach. The roads are rough and the drive is challenging.
Spend 2-3 hours exploring both beaches.
TEMPLE:
- Pura Paluang (Car Temple): A small cliff temple, only if you’re passing by. Not essential.
SUGGESTED 3-DAY PLAN:
Day 1 (arrive midday): Take a ferry from Sanur, settle in, rent a scooter, explore the Ped area, enjoy a sunset at Crystal Bay, and have dinner.
Day 2: Go snorkelling at Manta Point in the morning on a half-day tour. Have lunch, then head to Kelingking Beach in the afternoon for a viewpoint. Visit Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach before returning for dinner.
Day 3: Spend the morning at Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach. It’s a long drive, so allow plenty of time. Return via a scenic route. In the afternoon, pack up and rest. Have sunset at Crystal Bay or at your accommodation.
Day 4 (depart morning): Take a ferry back to Sanur or Bali at 9am or 10:30am. Continue to Uluwatu.
FOOD:
- Warungs: Affordable meals for £2-4.
- Limited Western Food: A few cafes serve burgers and pasta for £4-6.
- Fresh Seafood: Available at various restaurants.
- Penida Colada: Popular restaurant with decent food, £4-8.
PRACTICAL:
- Nusa Penida: Roads are rough with potholes, steep cliffs, narrow lanes, and scooters can be challenging but manageable. Drive slowly!
- License Checks: Police sometimes check your licence. Carry your international driving permit and passport.
- ATM in Ped: There’s an ATM in Ped, but it’s unreliable. Bring cash from Bali!
- Electricity: Electricity is limited. Some guesthouses only have generators. Charge your devices when available.
- December: Rain is possible, but mornings are usually clear.
- Kelingking Cliff: The edge is dangerous and has no railings. Be careful with photos and watch out for people falling.
- Angel’s Billabong: Check the tide. It’s only safe at low tide. High tide is dangerous.
