In 2023, the Chiang Mai Yi Peng Lantern Festival will be held for two days on
November 27th and 28th. The date of the Yi Peng Festival is based on the Lanna
Lunar Calendar and changes every year.
Each day will feature a grand sky lantern release event, which is the highlight
of the festival. It offers a gorgeous spectacle of thousands of sky lanterns
(khom loi) released into the night sky.
TOP TIPS
* Go to the opening ceremony of the Yi Peng lantern festival at the Three Kings
Monument and Lana Folklife museum on openings night (the night before the
full moon). There are dance performances, lanterns everywhere (note: not the
sky lanterns) and everyone visits temples and hangs a lantern on the ceiling.
The decorations are incredibly pretty and it feels so cozy everywhere. The
city-moat is also decorated with a track of candles.
