IMP: Grab (the asian equivalent of Uber) is available in some parts of
Cambodia. Unlike other parts of Asia, when backpacking in Cambodia you can get
a Grab-Tuk Tuk! In parts of the country where you can’t order a Grab, you can
use Pass App.
Make sure you check the price on Pass App or Uber beforehand so you know
you aren’t getting ripped off.
DO NOT STAY IN SIHANOUKVILLE! It’s a really horrible and dirty city. I spent 3
hours there waiting for a
bus and that was more than enough!

Koh Rong, Cambodia
Kong Rong Sanloem (islands of the south. to get here you have to go via
Sihanoukville. DONT SLEEP THERE!! just pass by.
How to get to Koh Rong Island
Avoid staying in Sihanoukville; it’s not a pleasant city with massive
construction from Chinese investors. Taking a night or morning bus to
Sihanoukville (arrive there in the morning) and catching one of the afternoon
ferries to the island is optimal. If this isn’t possible for your itinerary,
spend the night at Onederz
Sihanoukville* and catch a ferry the next morning.
To come here you have to go through Sihanoukvill. Night bus from Battambang?
Luckily, there are lots of boats heading to Koh Rong. Once you get off the bus,
you’ll have a lot of offers of tuk-tuks and scooters. Just hop on one of these
and they’ll take you to the place to buy your boat tickets. You might need to
wait around for a little while, but it shouldn’t be too long. Make sure you
specify where you want to go to on the island, as some boats go to different
places.
To get to Koh Rong, you must take the ferry from Sihanoukville. There are five
ferry companies operating the route from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong, so finding a
time that suits you is no challenge.
💰
Approx. $25 return
⏰ 45
mins
📍 You
can book the ferry in person at Sihanoukville Port Autonomous, or pre-book your
ferry using Camboticket*.
TIP: Buy an open return ticket as it will be slightly cheaper than two one-way
tickets – just notify the ferry company 24 hours before you want to return to
the mainland and they will confirm the ferry pick up for you.
NOTE: There are no ATMs on Koh
Rong so bring enough cash with you to cover your expenses while on the island.
Things to do:
* Relax on the many beaches
Take a boat trip around the island
Swim with bioluminescent plankton
Join the Nestival party
Kayak at the mangrove forest
Rent a motorbike and drive the island
Watch sunset from Sok San beach
Hike to the waterfall
Go horse riding on the beach

Visit a waterpark
Explore Bokor National Park
Take a day trip to Kep beach
Go rock climbing with Climbodia
Tour one of Kampot’s famous pepper farms
Swing in hammocks at the Secret Lake
Stay in a riverside bungalow
Take a sunset boat cruise
Kayaking down the Praek Tuek Chhu River
Explore Kampot town
How to get to Kampot: by bus or train (3/4 hours)
You can also get to Kampot from the southern ferry hub of Sihanoukville, but
note that buses are not operating this route currently (summer 2022) so you will
have to take a private car.
How to get around:
If you don’t know how to motorbike, then you can either rent a bicycle or hail
cheap tuk-tuk rides using Pass App. For things that are further outside Kampot
city, I suggest hiring a tuk-tuk driver for the day; Mr Lim comes highly
recommended!
