Kyoto, Japan
Optimized Day 1
• Early morning: Fushimi Inari Taisha (walk partway up, 1–1.5 hours on-site, more if you enjoy the trails).
• Late morning–early afternoon: Train to Uji for a quick wander (Byodo-in exterior area, Uji bridge, matcha shops), 2–3 hours total including transit.
• Mid/late afternoon: Maruyama Park and nearby streets in Higashiyama; you can just stroll without entering many paid temples.
• Evening: Pontocho Alley for dinner and atmosphere, then back to your hotel.
On Day 1, after Maruyama Park, add 1–2 hours to wander Gion: Yasaka Shrine gate, Hanamikoji-dori, and the small side lanes.
• Then cross the river to Pontocho for dinner and nightlife; this gives you a full Gion/Pontocho evening without changing the rest of the itinerary.
Optimized Day 2
• Morning: Philosopher’s Path (30–60 minutes if you mainly walk and don’t enter side temples).
• Late morning: Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) quick visit, usually 30–45 minutes to walk the one-way loop.
• Midday: To-ji Temple brief stop (famous pagoda; you can just enjoy the grounds and pagoda view).
• Afternoon: Head to Arashiyama for Okochi Sanso Garden and general area walk; 1.5–2 hours at the garden plus strolling through the streets/river area.
• Late afternoon/early evening: If you still have energy, slot in Ichimonjiya Wasuke (traditional sweets) on your way back or another evening around Pontocho/Gion.
Time and transport tips
• Limit each main stop to about 45–60 minutes; treat them as scenic stops rather than deep cultural visits.
• Use the Subway & Bus 1‑Day Pass (about 1,100 yen) on your busiest day to cut transit friction and costs.
• Aim to start around 8:00 and finish sightseeing by early evening; April crowds mean a bit of extra time moving between places.
