**Today, Siem Reap is a buzzing tourism hub packed with hotels, hostels, bars and shops, so it’s difficult to imagine that just a few years ago it was little more than a rural backwater.**
That is, until you head a few minutes out of town and suddenly find yourself among farmers planting rice, weaving thatch, harvesting vegetables, and transporting fresh produce to market by oxcart. This countryside tour is a chance to immerse yourself in the rural activity of Siem Reap, and a window into a way of life that can feel as though it hasn’t changed since Angkor was built.

Sukhothai is wat mij betreft één van de mooiste bezienswaardigheden van Noord-Thailand. De stad bestaat uit het nieuwe en het oude deel en vooral de oude ruïnes zijn fantastisch om te zien.
Zorg dat je in ieder geval tot 17.30u in het park blijft. Rond dit tijdstip gaat de zon namelijk onder en dit levert een prachtig schouwspel op. Zelf ben ik van 12.00u tot 18.00u in het park geweest en ik heb me geen seconde verveeld.
Het park is verdeeld is 5 zones en per zone betaal je 100 Baht. Een pas voor alle zones kost 350 Baht (ongeveer 10 euro).
Alle ruïnes staan in een straal van 5 kilometer van elkaar en al fietsend kun je aardig wat zien.

- de voormalige koningsstad van Thailand Het historische park is bezaaid met Boeddhabeelden, en je komt er het ene adembenemende tempelcomplex na het andere tegen.
- Ten oosten van het tempelcomplex vind je een aantal kleine guesthouses en hostels, wat restaurantjes en een paar winkeltjes. Je vindt hier zelfs een kleine, maar gezellige night market.
- Je kunt je van tempel naar laten rijden met een tuktuk, maar leuker is het om de fiets te pakken. Je kunt een fiets huren bij je guesthouse, of bij een verhuurbedrijfje op straat.

- duiken en snorkelen; Op Kecil kun je het beste snorkelen vanaf Long Beach en op Besar is het stuk water rondom Coral View Island Resort leuk om te snorkelen. Ook zijn er elke dag tours die naar snorkelplaatsen varen. (Je kunt op de Perhentians goedkoop je PADI halen; een certificaat waarmee je samen met een andere gecertificeerde duiker, tot een bepaald aantal meters (afhankelijk van je keuze) mag duiken. Je bent hier drie dagen mee bezig—> Je betaalt op dit eiland niet meer dan €230 voor het behalen van je PADI. Met je papier op zak, kosten de duiken daarna hier maar €20. Dit is aanzienlijk lager dan andere duikspots in Azië.)
- Goed om te weten is dat de verblijven op het eiland Kecil vaak alleen ’s nachts over elektriciteit beschikken. Ook is WiFi bij de accommodaties schaars. Hiervoor ben je aangewezen op de restaurants, maar ook daar werkt de WiFi niet perfect. Daarnaast kun je ook niet pinnen op de eilanden. Neem dus van tevoren genoeg geld mee, zeker als je wilt duiken. Een ander belangrijk punt is dat je de eilanden alleen kunt bezoeken in de maanden maart t/m oktober. De overige maanden zijn de eilanden namelijk ‘dicht’. Dat is namelijk het regenseizoen, waardoor alle restaurants en winkels gesloten zijn.

Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

- gratis rondlopen door de theeplantages
- Butterfly Farm, waar je naast veel grote vlinders, ook allerlei bijzondere insecten en andere dieren kunt zien. De entree kost ongeveer €1,50 en je bent hier een half uur tot een uur zoet.
- Je kunt ook een bezoekje brengen aan een van de strawberry farms. Het verschilt per farm wat je er kunt doen (bijvoorbeeld een rondleiding krijgen of zelf aardbeien plukken), maar een aardbei shake drinken is sowieso een must. Deze zijn heerlijk en super vers. De aardbeien zijn ook veelal te koop bij de kraampjes langs de weg.
- Ook staan de Cameron Highlands bekend om de trails die je kunt afleggen door de omgeving. De wandelroutes variëren van eenvoudig tot zwaar. Informeer hierover bij je accommodatie of een van de tour operators in het dorpje Tanah Rata. Ze helpen je graag met uitleg, zonder dat ze daar iets voor terug willen hebben. – Kick back and relax met een kokosnoot op Coral Bay Beach. Ons favoriete strand met de beste zonsondergangen en het mooist gekleurde water vanwege de aanwezigheid van kalksteen.
– Huur een scooter of fiets en trek het eiland rond.
– Voor een paar euro kun je al naar het dichtbij gelegen Pulau Giam. Een ideale bestemming om te snorkelen tussen de kleurrijke vissen en een traditioneel lokaal gerecht te eten bij een van de kiosken op het eiland.
– Bezoek een van de authentieke vissersdorpjes om de traditionele oude huisjes op het water te bewonderen en een glimp op te vangen van het eilandleven van 50 jaar geleden.
– Voor leuke activiteiten kun je terecht op het iets drukkere Pasir Bogak strand waar je kunt snorkelen, kajakken, raften of een bootje kunt huren om te dobberen op het water. Je kunt hier tevens ook parasailen om het schitterende eiland van bovenaf te zien!
– Bezoek het oud Nederlandse fort in Teluk Gedung.
– Ben je een duikliefhebber? Trek er dan een dag op uit om te duiken rondom het dichtbij gelegen eiland Pulau Jarak en maak kennis met de heldere en rijke onderwaterwereld.
