It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site town in north-central France near Paris. Its medieval architecture includes high ramparts with fortified gates and the stone Tithe Barn. It is beautifully preserved and offers a glimpse into life during the Middle Ages.

Nancy is famous for Place Stanislas, a UNESCO World Heritage site considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. It is the perfect place to enjoy dinner and a walk before finishing our drive the next day.

Strasbourg, France
Strasbourg is the capital city of the Grand Est region, formerly Alsace, in northeastern France. It's also the formal seat of the European Parliament and sits near the German border, with culture and architecture blending German and French influences.
Eight Christmas markets fill the historic centre, each with its own charm - from local crafts and gourmet treats to social initiatives and festive decorations. All are within easy walking distance. There will be a Christmas market map. Very crowded on Wednesday and the weekend. Less crowded on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Parking: Use the park-and-ride (P+R) facilities, then take a nearby tram to reach the city centre. €4.20 (provides unlimited access to the tram/bus network for everyone in the car).

Turckheim, France
Turckheim is a charming historic village famous for its night watchman. We will use this as our base to explore Colmar, Écomusée d'Alsace, Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, Ribeauvillé, etc. Also, Turckheim is only about 30–40 minutes from the German border. If we want (and if the roads are safe for us) we can do a German day!

Annecy, France
Turckheim → Annecy ~5 hours.
Stick to the French side (via A39/A40) to avoid needing a Swiss motorway vignette, however, if heavy snow is forecast, the major highways (Swiss route) are often better cleared than smaller French roads.
Known as the "Venice of the Alps," Annecy offers a charming, relaxed New Year's Eve setting nestled between snow-capped mountains and one of Europe's cleanest lakes. It will be cold and crisp due to its Alpine location, with temperatures likely near freezing. Expect a chance of snow or frost, especially at night. Dress warmly, as per Alsace. Sunrise: 7:55 AM Sunset: 4:40 PM.

World capital of mountaineering at the foot of Mont Blanc; an active Alpine experience with a lively Après-Ski scene. Expect low temperatures (well below zero) and significant snowfall. Even if not skiing, we’ll need a down jacket, thermal underwear, gloves, and a hat. Sunglasses and high-SPF lip balm for altitude glare is essential. Sunrise: 8:00 AM Sunset: 5:00 PM.
