A natural overnight stop on the way north — park near the Sundsvall bridge area by the Gulf of Bothnia. The old town Stenstan has beautiful late-19th century stone architecture worth a morning stretch. Wake up early on June 13 and push north along the E4.

Quick fuel and food stop in Umeå — it's a lively university city on the Ume River. Pick up supplies at a supermarket before heading into more remote territory. Continue northeast toward the Finnish border.

Cross the border into Finland at Tornio — the twin towns of Haparanda and Tornio straddle the border seamlessly. Note the one-hour time change entering Finland. A great place to stop for the famous Finnish cinnamon buns at a local café.

Sleep in the car overnight near the Kemi riverbank on June 13. In summer the sky barely gets dark this far north — embrace the midnight sun. Known for its massive SnowCastle in winter, but in June the river delta is beautiful for a morning walk.

Drive north on the E75 deep into Finnish Lapland — Sodankylä is the heart of reindeer country. Stop at the old Sodankylä church, one of the oldest wooden churches in Lapland. On June 14 evening, sleep somewhere off-road in the vast boreal forest.

Inari is one of the most magical spots in Finnish Lapland, home to the Sámi cultural center SIIDA — a must-visit to understand indigenous Arctic culture. Lake Inari is vast and serene, perfect for a midnight sun walk along the shore. Sleep by the lake on the evening of June 15.

Utsjoki is Finland's northernmost municipality, right on the Norwegian border along the stunning Teno River. Cross into Norway here over the beautiful river bridge. The salmon fishing in the Teno is legendary — you may see anglers at any hour in the midnight sun.

Head south on the E6 back into mainland Norway and stop in Alta on June 17. The Alta UNESCO World Heritage rock carvings are among the most impressive prehistoric art sites in Northern Europe. Sleep near the fjord and enjoy the warm Arctic evening light.

Drive south through dramatic fjord and mountain scenery — Narvik sits between towering peaks and deep blue fjords. The town has a moving WWII history with a worthwhile war museum. Sleep by the Ofotfjord on June 18 with views of the midnight sun reflecting on the water.

Continue south on the E6 to Bodø, gateway to the Lofoten Islands and just above the Arctic Circle. The Saltstraumen tidal current nearby is the world's strongest maelstrom — incredible to witness. Sleep near the coast on June 19 evening.

Cross the Arctic Circle back into the temperate zone near Mo i Rana. The Arctic Circle Center (Polarsirkelsenteret) on the E6 is worth a quick stop for photos. Sleep just south of the Arctic Circle on June 20 as you push toward the Danish border.

Trondheim, Norway
Drive through or make a brief morning stop in Trondheim on June 21. The Nidaros Cathedral is the world's northernmost medieval cathedral and stunning even from the outside. Keep moving south — you have a long drive back to Denmark ahead.

Gothenburg, Sweden
Re-enter Sweden after crossing from Norway via the E6 through Svinesund. Gothenburg is a good final fuel and food stop before the last stretch south. Push through to the Helsingborg ferry and back to Birkerød by evening on June 21.
