Chietón Morén Market Crafts Some of San José’s most beautiful buildings are
within walking distance of each other. To get your bearings, walk down Paseo
Colón, the central thoroughfare downtown. Then head straight to Teatro Nacional,
a stunning Neoclassical building that is home to Costa Rica’s national opera and
ballet companies. Just a few blocks away is San José’s Metropolitan Cathedral.
This sweeping building, dating from the 19th century, is best known for its
stained glass windows. San José is also home to several museums that will give
you a sense of the country’s history and culture.The sunshine-yellow National
Museum of Costa Rica is a solid place to get started, as it gives context about
indigenous history as well as the effects of Spanish colonization. Underrated,

immense Arenal Volcano lies La Fortuna, a sleepy town with an abundance of hot
springs and natural pools to enjoy. Departing at 8 am, you’ll arrive by private
vehicle after a 2-hour drive and have the rest of the day to do as you please.
Perhaps grab some fresh fruit in town, hop in a taxi to the entrance and then
hike to La Fortuna waterfall for a swim beneath the cascading waters that spill
out of the towering jungle. In the evening, chifrijo (fried pork, salsa, beans
and tortilla chips) is a great dish to try. The region offers a range of sights
such as stunning lush forest, rare plants, animal watching and water-based
sports on the lake. The volcano’s inner workings also mean that the area has
plenty of thermal springs where hot, lava-heated water gushes to the surface.
These springs, often surrounded by foliage, make the ideal place to relax.
Active types could try stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Arenal with the
incredible backdrop of the volcano and rolling green hills. Animal lovers will
have a good chance of spotting sloths, monkeys, crocodiles and basilisk lizards
skipping across the water on a boat tour of Cano Negro Reserve. Riverboat safari
in Arenal (Cano Negro, Peñas Blancas river?) - one of the best places to see
wildlife If you're traveling between Monteverde and Arenal, there's no good
excuse for skipping this stop. Viento Fresco is a series of five cascades,
including the spectacular Arco Iris (Rainbow Falls), which drops 75m (246ft)
into a refreshing shallow pool that’s perfect for swimming. There are no crowds
or commercialism to mar the natural beauty of this place. You’ll probably have
the falls to yourself, especially if you go early in the day. * Restaurante

waterways and mangrove habitat, seeing the park from the water. You could also
head to one of Manuel Antonio's famed beaches, rent a surfboard and spend some
time catching waves in the water, and rays on the sand. If you want to spot
wildlife and keep active at the same time, consider paddling through the
mangrove forest on a guided kayak tour. It’s not unusual for curious monkeys to
climb right onto the boat to say hello, and you’ll likely see snakes, crocodiles
and plenty of birdlife too. Just remember your insect repellent! Espadilla Beach
There's a bus that goes from Quepos to the park and passes by every

Punta Catedral: At its end, the isthmus widens into a rocky peninsula, with
thick forest in the middle, encircled by Sendero Punta Catedral. There are good
views of the Pacific Ocean and various rocky islets – nesting sites for brown
boobies and pelicans. Along this landbridge are the park's two amazing beaches,
Playa Manuel Antonio, on the ocean side, and the slightly less-visited (and
occasionally rough) Playa Espadilla Sur, which faces Manuel Antonio village.
With their turquoise waters, shaded hideouts and continual aerial show of brown
